Understanding The New Game Play

Will It Live Up To The Hype?

Nintendo has always thrown us curveballs when it comes to the interaction between the user and the game. The very same inquisitive response has been garnered from the controller of the Nintendo 64, the Wii Remote, and now the Wii U GamePad. Whereas most other controllers have grown more light and less mass, the Wii U GamePad, weighing in at 1.1 pounds and having a large screen in the middle, doesn’t seem to fit in the natural evolution. However, Nintendo has worked hand in hand with gamers and manufacturers alike to show every aspect of how the second screen would be used. When I was able to use the Wii U GamePad at the New York City Press Conference, I got a great idea of what gaming with the GamePad is all about.

I think that the number one use of the new GamePad when playing action games is the fast glance. During a quick glance, the second screen can be used to show information that is normally hidden within a menu. For example, when I was playing Tekken Tag Tournament 2, the screen on the GamePad shows combination attacks. In Ninja Gaiden 3, the GamePad screen displays special attacks and quick access to weapons. The screen also offers different views of the action. While playing NBA 2k13, I was able to select the Gatorade view. This shows all the players, as well as the activity level of those players. Given that information, you know who you may need to give a break later. When I was playing Assassin Creed 3, the GamePad displayed a sonar map displaying relative distance to objects near me. I navigated the rocks much more easily watching the sonar, than watching the forward view.

Most games requiring direct interaction on the GamePad, while using the TV screen as the primary view are for games with multiple players. in New Super Mario Brothers U for example, the Boost Mode enables the GamePad player to be a third party helping Mario and Luigi finish the level quickly. When I touch the screen, it drops blocks for the brothers or kills bad guys. When I played Metroid, my GamePad screen was everything my character sees as I am in the spaceship. The accelerometer and gyroscope allow movement of the GamePad to translate into course of the ship. Being surrounded by information and views makes for a vastly different experience from your fellow players.

Some games use the stylus interacting with the GamePad. Balloon Trip Beat, in Nintendo Land, uses touches from the stylus as wind, causing your balloon to travel in the desired direction. However, using the stylus to play a game requires you to hold the GamePad with one hand only. It is possible that the 1.1 pounds may become a problem after a while.

One awesome aspect of the Nintendo Wii U GamePad is that nearly all games can be played solely on the 6.2 inch touchscreen. It is true that Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 or Skylanders Giants games might seem like you are using them on merely large Game Gear. However, the Nintendo Wii U GamePad can give you the maximum game familiarity. You can change from the GamePad to the TV and back again very quickly. Not all games are particularly suited for GamePad only play. For instance, the requirements for Black Ops 2 include shooting quicker than your opponent, or moving out of the way. The buttons on the GamePad aren’t as intuitive for gaming like this.

The games that are forthcoming will make even better use of the camera, microphone, stylus, gyroscope, and accelerometer. The games available during the launch window run the gamete of variations, yet make you feel like you’re in a new world of gaming. Provided the gaming developers take up the challenge, we will having new gaming adventures on the Wii U for years to come.
